The Latin root word of “curate” is “to care for.” Our clients experience this in practice through a carefully considered selection of artists vetted by extensive art market research in accordance with a collection’s unique mission and tailored for specific needs. We write interpretive text that is appropriate for a range of employees, clients, and visitors.

Purchases and Commissions

We facilitate the purchase of artwork and the execution of artist commissions. This can range from artworks purchased directly from an art gallery to major outdoor installations in collaboration with an artist. Our team ensures both that client needs are met and that the artistic voice is presented in an authentic way. All these activities are conducted according to the highest ethical standards. Purchases are made directly between the source and the client, which ensures clean transfer of title. The extensive gallery relationships that we maintain provide access to cost savings through thoughtful negotiations.

Artwork Valuation and Appraisal

It can be appropriate for clients to revisit the monetary value of their collection for the purposes of insurance, donation, deaccession, estate planning, and sale. Our team provides artwork valuations based on extensive knowledge of the current art market and coordinates with certified appraisers to supply an additional level of detail.

Deaccession Planning and Management

Deaccession, the official removal of items from a client’s holdings, is a natural and healthy part of a collection’s life cycle. Our team is uniquely positioned to help the client navigate this part of the process. Artworks chosen for deaccession are considered within the context of the collection and may be allocated for donation to a museum, sold at auction, or otherwise relinquished. We can make recommendations based on artwork value and the mission of the collection, making sure to comply with relevant legal requirements, company policy and procedures, and IRS documentation.

Case Study:

Canadian Headquarters

Toronto, Canada | Mural Commission and Artwork Acquisition

The Lumiere Group was tasked with featuring artists from across all provinces of Canada for Microsoft’s premier Canadian operations hub, in particular artworks created by First Nations and Indigenous artists. We worked with artists who employed an array of media and materials, and the featured artwork is a brilliant mural incorporating elements of both traditional and industrial design by Mi’kmaq artist Jordan Bennett.
